I am 'Literally' Uninstalling

JohnMayer, Wed Feb 27 2008, 05:34AM

Hi all,
I am going to take a CS break.

I made this decision primarily to gain back an extra 8-10 hours or so per week. I need to channel this energy into some projects around the house which need to take priority over my "unwinding" after a long workday.

I am also choosing now because my frustration-meter seems to be at an all-time high when it comes to dealing with hackers and what seems to be allowed on FTC. I won't go any further into this age-old debate; no, I don't have any "hard" evidence (who does) of people doing this or that. I just know what I've seen and have played this game long enough (7 years) to know the difference.

Where I come from we have a word for such unnatural performance, and it ain't "respectable". I am choosing to remove myself from the problem, not try to solve a problem that for so long has gone unfettered by the management. Some have tried, and each time they failed and were made into an example, their rusting failboat hulks left scattered along the path for all to notice.

I can't do anything about it and no admin wants to listen to incessant whining; this is win-win for everyone. I'm no stat whore, but I like to have at least a fair chance. This game has devolved into something where the hacks are undetectable and impossible to prove. It is nothing like when CSS was brand new and the hacks had not yet been developed. Now it's 1.x all over again. I have _never_ hacked even in the slightest and I won't stoop to doing it now just to keep up.

I can't say when I will be back. Hopefully I will before the end of the summer, but I'm just not sure. I will take this opportunity to say that I have really enjoyed spending a lot of my free time with you guys. I have looked forward to CS pretty much every night, and it has always been there when I needed to blow off some steam (no pun intended).

One of the things I started to do was bind quotes; I am going to leave them here in case someone wants to carry on the tradition:

bind "j" "say [ftw] Panglarb: how about a nice cup of your a bad player and shouldnt talk"
bind "l" "say DreiZ : WOW OUCH MY HEADSET JUST LAGGEd"
bind "p" "say [FT] A Drunk: 'YOU SUCK LITERALLY BALLS'"

Some of you have stood out as truly enjoyable teammates in-game and I will call some of you out:

Evilpig - Tetris, nuff said. And for sharing in my frustration at times.
BadNewsBear - Reciprocal team flashes.
Compost - Your sweet, young voice. Never grow up.
Trueagle - We have been friends for a long time. You got me into this after FO shutdown. Thanks for your vote and keep on believing in you-know-who.
B4nDiTo! - Always up for a back hall nades.
Baghdad Bob - I'll never be so good with a deagle.
Caveman - One of the few I'm better than. smile
Memnoch - I hate your face, but I love you.
Special Fred - For introducing me to the tank in the first place, so long ago. Also for countless laughs in NOBS and PBTH.
Cryptic/Raptor - Good times long ago.
Tiger297 - For a reality check (you can take a break from CS and survive!)
Alcohol-Powered - I love you, Alex.

I plan to play until this Friday night and then shut it all down after that. See ya'll until then, and I'll try to pop in the forums from time to time to say hello.

Regards,
[FT] John Mayer [9²5]

Thanks for mentioning me frown

No prackotine (whatever you call it) for you!

I'm assuming this whole hax situation is aimed at Kever. I used to feel the same way.

However.. after playing so much and geting a little better I can see that she's not even that great.

She's better then most of us in the tank, but she primarily camps'ish / floats around and baits her teammates for kills.

She has a good / decent shot as well.

However, there are better out there beleive it or not mayor nub.

Sorry to see you leave John.
Can I sing you a song of your's and make it all better?

Either way, I know where you are coming from, And hope to see you back from your break before the end of the summer break!

John, You have been one of the most fun, happy, and great people I have met in FTC in my short time here. I truly become elated when I see, "You got Huskered!" and realize you're on, whether under your name or not.

I've had a great time playing with you, and while I wish that you were not leaving, I fully support your decision. I will continue to make it a priority to play with you until Friday.

And I also want to state that I agree that the line between hacking and playing respectfully has become nebulous. Regardless of what people may say, the thought wanders back into my head regularly.

However, that is not my point here. I want to personally thank you for countless good times on FTC. You, Laotzu, Bob, Bear, and Alex have always been the reason that I play Terrorist so often (There are a hundred others, don't pull a Pracket and bitch for me not mentioning you. Pracket, you are not on the list because you consistently fuck me in the ass as a CT). I hope you can change your mind in the not-to-distant future so I can continue my friendship with you.

Feel free to contact me whenever or however.

Forums are probably best but:

Take care John...rather funny you mention my deagle...

Pracket, I edited my response yet again, but you continue to underestimate the importance of this thread by bringing the attention back onto yourself, which is not important as you still intend to be with us.

Tastecoldsteel never came back.
Regardless, I expect that you will return John. In the meantime, I'm glad you posted these binds, it saves me the trouble of having to try to reconstruct them from memory. (Though that probably wouldn't be too hard given how many times I've seen you use them.) I will try to see you on Friday night.

Hey John, it's been awesome to play with you the times that I Have played. You are probably one of the most hilarious guys I have played with ever in the tank, and it's a disappointment to see you go. The only advice I have to offer to you is just channel your frustration into something else like I do. People are better than you and sometimes it is hard to accept. I know I still haven't accepted that fact yet tongue

Anyways, whatever you do in those extra 8 to 10 hours of your life, make sure it's something that is going to contribute a lot into your life. Substituting life for FT is almost against God, so choose wisely tongue

Gonna miss you man, hopefully you come back before the intended time you set (Which is at the end of summer, that's wayyyy too long!)

I have threatened to uninstall the game many times because of my frustration, but here I am still playing. I hope you consider the same. Peace buddy!

Hey John, sorry to see you go. I'm not sure why but it seems that you and I turned a corner last weekend after a string of negative incidents on FTC this month. Whether you decide to return or not I'd like to talk to you over PM, Friends, etc. and get some closure on why we had problems. I understand why you're leaving and I respect you taking personal responsibility for your decision.

There is one detail I find immensely interesting in your post. You say "I can't do anything about it," when referring to the hacking issue and at first I though you should have phrased it as: "I am choosing not to do anything about it." Most FTC'ers understand that peer-reviewed demo(s) as evidence of a regular hacking is a solid requirement for banning on FTC. So my first thought was that since you and others don't bother to record and post a demo of alleged hacking then, well, you're just walking away. Then I reread your post and it hit me--maybe you _are_ doing something about it!

Er, well... maybe. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, and I am sure your primary reason for taking a break is genuinely wanting to spend time doing other things, but what if, in the same process, you're trying to be an agent of change on FTC. I apologize if I missed the mark completely and I'm only speculating here--I mean no disrespect by doing so. Either way you've got me thinking about the hacking topic you mentioned.

It's probably time to readdress the name-that-should-not-be-named-concerning-hacking issue. I don't think this thread is the correct place to dicuss it, though, and I will try to catch up with the other Ops/Lead Admins on FTC and start a dialog about this elsewhere. More details later...

Thanks for taking a break in style, John. I hope we get a chance to talk soon, and I will try to show up on Friday to send you off proper. wink

Wow John.... it really sucks to see you go. Like others ive had some amazing times with you, and not seeing your name on at night will really have an impact on me. I was just in the tank playing with you and other FT members saying how proud we should be that we have most of the old guys still around and its a really enjoyable community to play with. Ive seen some noobies come in and say that recently, and it really made me notice all the friends ive made and how awesome it is to play with guys like you.

Like you, im not a stat whore, and im absolutely horrid in game. I really only play to have fun, so looks like backhall nades and bind quotes are gonna go on without you frown

Congrats on making such an honorable and respectable decision buddy. I hope I get to see you sooner then the end of the summer.

frown hugs and kisses(as Kddude would say)

Re: I am 'Literally' Uninstalling
JohnMayer, Thu Feb 28 2008, 05:52PM

Wow, guys, thanks for all the kind words.

Let me say first that this isn't primarily about the hacking.

I am going to let you guys in on the scoop: last week I learned that my wife is preggo with the Deuce (what I've named our second kid). This means that when I come home at night from a long, draining day at the office, even though I am VERY inclined to plop down at the computer and pwn some noobs, I can't justify it because I have a long list of projects that we really need to complete before the Deuce drops.

This includes but is not limited to: complete kitchen remodel, move all my crap out of my home office and set it up as a kids room, complete various things around the house that I'll never have time for when we have a newborn and a 3 year old running around (painting, gardening, new patio cover, etc etc etc).

Alex, thank you for the kind words and I want to say publicly that I have no ill feelings towards you. We can discuss further in PM.

So, I'm going to hit all of the projects hard and try to get it all done before the end of the summer. When I have my wife happy and some breathing room I will come back. But if I leave Steam installed I will be way too tempted (just a half hour...), so I'm removing it.

Now I'll say something else about the hacking. It's true that all this is not about hacking, but as Alex noted, it is probably worth a re-visit. Unfortunately we don't have any Valve employees or Steam programmers, so there isn't much chance that we will fix Steam or completely prevent hax in CS. However, I am concerned that there are regulars on the FTC who use them for a competitive edge.

Sure, there are the noobs who come here straight from the myg0t website with their new hax and are all spinning around and walling and radaring or whatever, very obviously using them, so much that everyone notices and votebans. But these others, _perhaps_ there are regulars (and I'm certainly not going to even try to name names) who have mastered the art of subtle application of hax.

Alex was right when he said that most folks don't bother with demoing. However, if the hax are used subtlely with no blatantly obvious behavior, what is there to demo? Someone getting a slightly above average number of scout headshots? It won't hold up in court. So, I can voice concerns, but CS is CS and it won't change anytime soon. I am indeed frustrated at times but it's still a blast playing with you guys.

And Aks, I'm sorry if it's annoying that I nade the cabinets in T spawn every round, I honestly don't do it just to piss you off. I just like to go for the stack. Just pay some damn attention to my radio warning. smile

Congratulations on dropping a Deuce John.

I'm happy for you, and can't wait until the end of Summer. See you in...I guess 6 months. That's a long fucking time.

Damnit.

Madvillain, Thu Feb 28 2008, 07:10PM

Hmmm, its good for u to re-post, now you cleared up a lot of misconceptions i had about u leaving. However, all i can hope is that you John Mayer is wrong about the FT regulars that you claim hack. I mean, i really wouldn't mind hearing the real issue brought to the surface instead of dancing around it. While there was a huge discussion about the banning of Kever (the first name that pops up into my mind after reading ur post mayer) you claim there are regulars that have this common hacking appearance. Mayer, i would greatly appreciate you sending me a PM about the details of your concern and the reason you are leaving. From what i gather from my reading it may seems you have somewhat of a argument to base your claims seeing how no one has dismissed your opinions( especially Alex, when i saw him post i thought he would of). If theres a serious problem with breaking the rules on the FT server I will personally look into the problem best i can.

BTW i sent you a PM to get your attention just in case.

Congratz on the Deuce! Hopefully you can finish your projects and join us in a few months. I'll miss your massive burps. Wall-shaking belches are a lost art, Barney Gumble (Simpsons) would be proud. wink You raise some good points and interesting insight with regards to hacking and I'm sure that there will be a time and place to elaborate on it, but this thread is about the man, the myth, the legend... Mayer. <3 Catch ya when you get back. If Friday will be your last night for a while, we'll have to send you off in style. wink

Re: I am 'Literally' Uninstalling
alcosatz, Thu Feb 28 2008, 11:50PM

John, I understand your perspective much better now and I wish you the best. We'll catch up over Friends or forum PM at some point over the next few weeks!

Just a quick comment on madvillain's post: No idea what opinions I'm supposed to dismiss in this thread. I don't think John is trying to bring any kind of evidence up, and he appears to be citing secondary reasons for focusing on other parts of his life instead of CS:S. It's slightly irritating that you think I'm supposed address hints about unnamed hackers on a "Leave The Light On" thread. We can discuss the hacking issue elsewhere.

And Goose, I've always suspected John's burps were simulated. They are way too airy, and have little depth to them. I've commented on it in-game before and this is nothing new. While I've considered recording demos of his burps over voice chat compared to mine (yes, mine are the real deal--half a beer comes up with them sometimes!), I never go around to it. I am distressed that he won't be around much longer for me to launch a formal inquiry into the synthesized nature of his burps... frickin' burphacker!

Ok that was a lame attempt to make light of the hacking concerns, sorry! tongue
