World Cup 2006
Night_Ninja, Sat May 27 2006, 01:29AM
So, cmon now no threads on soccer?! Or as the rest fo the world calls it, football? Well I am appalled, so I went ahead and made this for all the soccer fans who frequent the FT site, so join with me as we celebrate the most fantastic sport on earth

So! 13 days and 14 hours to go till the kickoff in Munich (not that I'm counting down or anything). Any favorites for the win? I think Brazil will have a good showing, but I think germany will be a top contender as well, with the tourny being held in their country and all.
So, discuss

USA all the way! Kind of sucks we picked the "group of death" and we have to play #2 Czech Republic our first match... but if we can at least pull a draw, we will be in perfect position to dominate. I'm hoping for a top 3 finish this year.
Can't wait for the 12th...

Yess a fellow ninja and football lover, yeah I was there when they played Jamaica in Raleigh (where I live) and they looked bad, but I heard they had all they're major players out, so I think they'll be fine as long as they can advance, cause they're group...daaamn.
And wu, it's usually on espn, or espn2, like when the World Cup starts it'll be everywhere, and then you watch with rapt attention.

France's got a good chance with Henry though, he's just damn sick, if you saw the FC Barcelona VS. Arsenal FC final, daaaaamn.

I'm not a big fan of soccer, but it's cool to see enough people interested to have a thread.
The only thing I know about soccer is that it is the world's most watched sport.

And you came here...? To start a flame war? Or just...to state your opinion, which....would start a flame war? Or for no reason at all, and you just had to hit that reply to thread button.

lol, emerican don't hate biatch.
I love soccer, played it all my life, watch it when I can. This WC especially excites me cause all games will be played on ESPN,ESPN2 or ABC. So, I won't miss much. I personally have always loved Italy. One of my favorite players growing up was Alessandro Del Piero, so I've felt for all of Italy's unfortunate losses. This year looks good for them though. I think Czech is overrated, Nedved isn't great anymore and there other players are only decent. USA, when they play well are top notch. When they don't, they are f*cking terrible. Ghana are a ?, like most African teams.
Regardless of who wins, they will get beat down by Brazil. Brazil will probably win this year considering, I can't imagine any defense can handle the power and speed of Adriano and the playmaking of Ronaldinho.

I'm Polish so soccer is in my blood, even though I don't follow it now too much. I hope Italy wins the whole cup, as the Poles have absolutely no chance. I'v watched that Poland vs US match 4 years ago. Was it 3 to 1? WOOT! Go Poland. The US dosen't have that much of a team. The other countries sad to say are born with it. I say I want either Italy or Argentina to take the cup at the end. I used to root for Mexico(good bless their feable attepmts at a win) and Brazil but I don't like them much now.England can suck my lefy nut and I'll leave my right one for France. Peace

lol I've seen the gay referee video, funny stuff. Well it seems that the true footballers have come out of the woodwork

Yeah I agree with you that most countries have football in their blood, mainly because they're such old countries, like America didn't get in the whole soccer thing until like a hundred years ago, but I tihnk the youth of America really are starting to love the spot, so in years coming American soccer will be something hopefully.
My blood's hungarian (born in NJ) so I play and watch it all the time, I don't really ahve any favorites, but I think Italy and Germany will have a good showing, because of nationalism and well Italy's really due for a good showing, last WC they lost to south korea?

Atta boy Bleek, I'm a polock too. The Poles looked like they had a decent squad coming together a couple years ago. Dudek, Olisdebe, etc, but playing in Europe is tough shit. England won't do anything this year I beleive. Not cause they don't have the talent, but anyone who really follows football knows how dumb Sven is. (Sven Goran Eriksson is the coach of England) Not to mention no Rooney will be a problem. I think Argentina could be big. They're always very good technically, yet they can't match the physical prowess of Brazil. However, this year looks a little closer. Overall, I still gotta go for, and hope for, a Italy/Brazil final.

Cha Siew Bao, Mon May 29 2006, 04:20AM
yeah but south korea thrives on a violent team that constantly runs after the ball. They're the only team i can think of off the top of my head that actually has people running for the ball when its being passed in a defensive triangle on the wrong side of the field. My bet for 2006, IVORY COAST!!!! a country full of militants playing soccer? you know the violence is going to be amazing

SK is just beast in terms of althleticism, they're like super soldiers of the future, but the technical skill is lacking, like in Bazil soccer, it oozes style and skill, which is something I try to put into my game. Joga Bonito.

Did Iraq qualify? 'cause I'm pretty sure an Iraq vs U.S. game would be one I wanna watch.

Even though I'm not really a soccer fan, (once every 4 years) i still consider the World Cup as a prime drinking opportunity. Its a good excuse to get loaded at a bar and chant random shit in a language that I don't even understand. Plus some Euro chicks wearing just a flag draped around their titties is alrighty by me.

It won't be hard to avoid it if you flip to ESPN. Considering there should be a game on almost as soon as the last one ends.
